Churchyards

Churchyards are a traditional place of burial for those living within a parish. A parishioner is defined as someone who normally resides in the ecclesiastical parish in question. Additionally, a person on the church electoral roll at the time of death and a person happening to die in the parish also have a right of burial in the churchyard.

In Torbay, churchyard burials can take place at several locations, however some are only able to offer burial in existing family graves:

  • St Mary’s Church in Brixham

Local authority cemeteries

Locally there are several Local Authority Cemeteries. Some offer new graves, some only in existing plots. Some also allow for plots to be pre purchased, which we recommend if considering your future wishes.

  • Torquay Cemetery (Hele Road) offers new burial plots as well as burials in existing graves where permissible. Plots cannot be pre purchased.

  • Newton Abbot Cemetery (Old Totnes Road) allows for burials in new and existing plots. Plots can also be pre purchased but only for a limited period in advance of 20-years

  • Kingsteignton Cemetery (New Cross Park) allows for burials in new and existing plots. Plots can also be pre purchased but only for a limited period in advance of 20-years.

  • Totnes Cemetery (Plymouth Road) lies in a peaceful, semi-rural setting in Follaton within walking distance of the town centre of Totnes. The Cemetery is run by Totnes Town Council, and anyone may apply to be buried in its grounds. Space is available in consecrated land for burials or cremated remains. There is also a section for members of the Catholic faith. It is possible to pre purchase plots in Totnes Cemetery. Please contact us for further details.

  • Teignmouth & Dawlish Cemeteries allow for burials in new and existing plots. Plots can also be pre purchased but only for a limited period in advance of 20-years.

  • Dartmouth Cemetery (Dartmouth Town Council).

Private parish cemeteries

Privately owned burial grounds are available in several locations:

  • Kingswear Cemetery (Kingswear Parish Council)

  • Bishopsteignton Cemetery (Bishopsteignton Parish Council)

Stockman & Loram can also help with arranging a burial in private ground, other than a churchyard or cemetery. This is not forbidden by law, although new private grounds can only be opened with the consent of the local Environmental Health Authority. We have previously helped families to arrange this, such as a farmer being buried on his land near Totnes. Please contact Sebastian Loram for further information on 01803 882385.
