Music is often the medium through which many of us choose to process some of life’s most painful moments, and the loss of a loved one is no exception. Whether you’re grieving a relative, a friend or a partner, finding solace in music can sometimes help to alleviate some of the pain, if even for a little while. The universal experience of loss means that no matter what you might be feeling at this time – be it sadness, anger, frustration or confusion – there will be a song that speaks to you.
Because we all mourn in unique ways, we’ve put together this list of 4 songs which approach the subjects of grief, loss and death slightly differently.
Eric Clapton, ‘Tears in Heaven’
No list of songs about grief would be complete without this ever-popular funeral song. Penned after the tragic death of his four-year-old son, ‘Tears in Heaven’ expresses the pain of a parent in mourning, questioning whether his child will remember him when they see each other in heaven. It’s a deeply personal tribute that’s no doubt relatable to others in a similar position.
Sufjan Stevens, ‘Death With Dignity’
Sufjan Stevens’ extensive discography is notorious for touching on loss in its many forms, but never is this theme more apparent than on his 2015 LP Carrie and Lowell – an album directly inspired by the death of his estranged mother. The opening track, ‘Death With Dignity’, sets the tone for what’s to come, as Stevens describes his complex feelings surrounding her death and their lack of relationship whilst she was alive. If nothing else, the tracks on Carrie and Lowell are useful for days when you need to wallow in your grief.
Taylor Swift, ‘Majorie’
A tribute to her late grandmother, Majorie Finlay, Taylor Swift speaks to a common feeling after the death of an older relative: a longing to know more about her and regret over not taking the time to do so (“I should have asked you questions / I should have asked you how to be”). While Swift laments over not saving small keepsakes like supermarket receipts, she expresses gratitude for the words of wisdom Majorie imparted to her: “Never be so kind, you forget to be clever / Never be so clever, you forget to be kind”. This beautiful song highlights that the most valuable ways to keep someone’s memory alive aren’t always material.
The Beatles, ‘Let It Be’
A band and song that requires no introduction, this legendary single from the Fab Four is a bit like a warm hug. Because sometimes the only way to stay sane in the face of grief is through acceptance, ‘Let It Be’ posits that you shouldn’t waste time questioning the universe’s seemingly random and unfair motives, and to embrace life instead. Simplistic lyrics combined with a quiet piano refrain make this a comforting listen for those in mourning.
