A Guide to Different Coffin Types

The loss of a loved one is never easy, and friends and family may feel overwhelmed when it comes to organising the funeral. There are many decisions to be made, from choosing funeral flowers to arranging transport, and each choice you make will be highly personal to you and the deceased. Choosing a coffin or casket is often one of the most emotive decisions and it’s important that you feel you’ve chosen a fitting tribute to your loved one.

We understand that this process might be difficult, so if you’re not sure where to start, see below for a brief guide to the different options available.

Coffin or casket?

The terms coffin and casket are often used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences between the two. The main distinction is the shape; coffins are wider at the shoulders and then taper down towards the feet, whereas a casket is rectangular. There may also be some differences in materials; caskets are traditionally made of solid wood or metal, whereas coffins can be made from eco materials, solid wood or wood veneer. We will discuss the different types of coffins available in more detail below.

Traditional

Traditional coffins have a solid flat lid, tapered shape and classic metal hardware and handles. They’re most commonly made from a wood like oak or mahogany and this can be solid, or a wood veneer, depending on your budget. Traditional coffins are available in a range of natural colours, from pale ivory through to rich dark brown mahogany.

Eco coffins

If your loved one was environmentally conscious then you may wish to opt for a green funeral and an eco or ‘natural coffin’. These coffins are made from biodegradable materials such as cardboard, willow, bamboo or grass reeds, which break down quickly to become reabsorbed into the earth. Eco coffins pose no harm to the environment and they’ve seen a rise in popularity in recent years.

Personalised

If you’re looking for a coffin that’s completely unique, consider a personalised or picture coffin. These options can be made from wood or cardboard and completely customised to honour the deceased. Some people opt for a printed design which covers the entire coffin, or you can add motifs, smaller pictures, quotes, or messages.
