At Stockman & Loram we are often surprised by some of the misconceptions that people have about funerals and how to arrange them. We are always happy to discuss any queries that people may have about an of the services that ewe provide.
In no particular order:
Myth 1 – Funerals have to cost a fortune. This is very current. Our advice is to actually sit down with us and discuss your wishes. We are always able to offer a service that reflects the budget, or suggest ways that can still incorporate key aspects but perhaps without the cost of doing it another way. Visit a couple of funeral directors to see what they’re like. We are all different, we don’t all charge the same, and sometimes there’s a very good reason for that. Some funeral directors charges seem a lot less than everyone else, be aware this is often reflected in the lower standard of service being offered. So try to be a bit critical and understand what you’re getting for your money.
Myth 2 – Family have to view the deceased. Not at all. This is a very personal choice, some people find great comfort and closure from viewing their loved one on our chapel of rest. For others, the thought of seeing their loved one laying in a coffin is too traumatic to bear. In these circumstances it is often nicer to remember the person in a happier time, in control of life and doing something they enjoyed. It is these memories that will hold people close.
Myth 3 – Embalming is compulsory. While there is definitely a benefit in terms of keeping the deceased stable in our care, embalming is not compulsory. We advise families on a case-by-case basis depending on the circumstances.
Myth 4 – Are those the right ashes?. One of the most common myths… The cremation takes place in a single cremator, which is cleared after each cremation. This ensures that the cremated remains that we collect from the crematorium are definitely those of your loved one. Crematoriums are happy to talk through this in more detail and even show you around on request.
Myth 5– Coffins are recycled at crematoriums. Due to the carbon footprint of a cremation things may change in the future, but currently the entire coffin and all contents are cremated.
Myth 6 – Charges exist for crossing county borders. This is no longer the case, although we do need to notify the coroner to take a body outside England and Wales and arrange for an “Out of England Order” – so if you are in England and want the funeral in Scotland, you would need to notify the appropriate local authorities.
There really is no such thing as a silly question so feel free to ask us by e-mailing info@stockmanandloram.co.uk or calling 01803 882385
