Tips For Planning a Funeral Service

Funeral Services: How To Plan A Personalised Funeral

Arranging a funeral isn’t easy, and it can feel like a daunting task during what is already a difficult time. It can be a necessary part of the grieving process, and is the perfect time to honour the memory of your loved one. Most funerals are arranged through a funeral director, though it is also possible without one. Funeral directors can help take care of the formalities and paperwork, leaving you time to plan other aspects of the ceremony.

Finding The Right Funeral Director

Ask for recommendations from friends and family, community groups or a local faith leader. Knowing someone who has had a good experience with a funeral director is a good indicator of whether they are likely to accommodate your requests and help you personalise your ceremony.

Choosing A Casket/Coffin

Depending on your loved one, there are a range of different coffins and caskets out there for everyone. Don’t rush your choice, this might be a new experience and so you don’t have to settle on the first or most expensive coffin you see.

Basic Coffins

For a lot of people, the choice of the coffin is a ver personal one.  Some people have specific requests such as wicker, or often the most simple available would suffice.  Tee basic types of coffin are the Dart and Minster. Both are wood effect coffins, the Dart is an elm foil and the Minster is an oak veneer effect foil coffin.  All cremation coffins are based on mdf or chipboard with the outer finish being the difference.

Eco-Friendly Coffins

If your loved one cared about the environment and made a conscious effort to minimise their carbon footprint, it could be worth choosing an environmentally friendly coffin. Made from sustainable materials such as wicker, wool, cardboard & more, materials that are actually more sturdy than you might think.

Cremation

Although this takes up less space than a traditional burial, cremation is more energy-intensive, so not the  best option if a loved one was concerned about the environment. However, this can be a good idea if a loved one desired to have their ashes scattered amongst beautiful scenery.

Ashes can be transported in cremation urns or scatter tubes, Stockman & Loram offer a range of these items to suit most tastes.  We also offer a range of cremation jewellery and other memorial items.

Choose A Headstone

Even if a loved one has been cremated, having a memorial headstone or a place you can go to pay your respects can be a good idea, funeral directors and stonemasons have a great selection to choose from and offer tailor-made engraving and plaques.  The ashes can be interred in the plot, which may incur additional fees. Stockman & Loram will be able to advise you of these charges in advance of making any decisions.

Funeral Transport

Would your loved one prefer a sophisticated luxury hearse, or would they instead prefer something a bit more out of the ordinary and traditional?

There is a vast choice of transport out there, so you are sure to find something right for the service.

Horse Drawn Hearse

Not only is this the most environmentally friendly funeral option, it also offers an elegant way to honour the life of a loved one. Even the most simple funeral ceremony can suit a traditional horse-drawn hearse, it can make quite an emotional impact, worthy of the life of your loved one.

Motorcycle Hearse

For deceased family or friends that loved motorbikes or were simply a free spirit that liked to do things differently, a motorcycle hearse is a great way to personalise a funeral ceremony. Available in a range of styles, from beautiful Harley Davidson and vintage motorcycles to more modern sports bikes, to make a loved one’s final journey a memorable one.

Car Hearse

Whether you want a simple and elegant modern hearse or a vintage hearse, there are so many different types of chauffeur-driven hearses out there. With a fleet of luxurious chauffeur-driven limousines and hearses available, we can provide simple funeral transport to make your loved one’s final journey a dignified one.

Alternative Hearses

There are also a range of options to customise funeral transport with flowers and bouquets to spell out the name of loved ones to make it that bit more personal.

Floral Tributes

Selecting a fitting tribute of funeral flowers often takes careful thought and consideration. The advice and guidance of an expert can be helpful in this scenario to help you plan the perfect funeral flower arrangements for the ceremony within budget. From funeral transport flowers spelled out in the name of a loved one, flowers for the ceremony or flowers to lay at the headstone, flowers offer a beautiful way to honour a loved one.

Design The Ceremony

Think about how you would like to honour the life of a loved one. A funeral and memorial service is about bringing people together during a difficult time to celebrate the life of a loved one.

Funeral Service Music

A loved one may have had a favourite song that they wished to be remembered by, you could also create a playlist that can be played during the entrance and exit of the ceremony that reminds you of them.

Speeches and Poems

Poetry can sometimes help us find the words for feelings and emotions that are otherwise hard to describe. You could read a passage from a favourite book or dedicate a poem in their honour as part of the funeral service. Encouraging people to share stories of loved ones can also help in bringing joy and laughter during the service, which can help as a necessary part of the grieving process.

Your cost may dictate the type of funeral transport that you choose, if you have an idea of a way to personalise a funeral service but don’t currently have the funds available, you could start a crowdfund or reach out to friends and family with your idea who may be able to help.
