Cremation has become an increasingly popular choice in recent years, with direct cremations now starting to emerge as a simpler and more cost-effective alternative to traditional options. While most of us are familiar with cremation and what it involves, direct cremation is still a mystery to a lot of people. This short guide will outline some of the basic information you should know about direct cremation.
What is Direct Cremation?
Direct cremation offers a contemporary alternative for anyone who doesn’t want a funeral service bound by tradition. This option enables families and friends to commemorate the deceased in their own way, with many choosing to hold a separate memorial event or celebration of life to say their goodbyes.
While certain traditional elements are excluded from direct cremations – for example, a minister, pallbearers and luxury transportation – the same level of care and respect goes into their planning and execution. By removing these elements and skipping the embalming, viewing and funeral service stages, families can reduce costs whilst still giving their loved one a meaningful send-off.
How Does a Direct Cremation Work?
With a direct cremation, the deceased will be collected, prepared for cremation and cared for until the date of the cremation. Unlike traditional funerals, there is no requirement for embalming or other preparations, except for the removal of any medical devices and jewellery to be returned to the family. It’s worth noting that the body is typically placed in a simple container for transportation, as opposed to a traditional coffin.
The family is usually not informed of the cremation date unless they plan to be present. Approximately 90% of direct cremations occur without people present, so there is no need to feel obliged to attend. Following the cremation, the deceased’s ashes will be given to the family or scattered in a memorial garden, depending on the preferences of the deceased and/or their family. Some service providers may charge additional fees for the return of the ashes, but here at Stockman & Loram this is not the case.
It is then left to the discretion of the family and friends to determine how they want to commemorate the deceased’s life.
Benefits of a Direct Cremation
Cost-Effective: Direct cremation costs are considerably lower than other options, as it does not involve many the expenses associated with traditional funerals.
Simplicity: The process is straightforward, allowing families to focus on grieving and saying their goodbyes rather than logistical complexities.
Flexibility: Families have the freedom to plan memorial services at their own pace, choosing when and where to hold them.
Environmental Considerations: Direct cremation is considered more environmentally friendly than traditional options, as they do not involve embalming chemicals, land use for burial plots, and headstones.
Personalisation: Unlike traditional funerals, direct cremation offers creative freedom, allowing families to personalise the memorial experience in various ways – for example, with a celebration of life or gathering to scatter the ashes.
